Meet our January Volunteer of the Month, Mandisa Alston! Mandisa Alston is a CIS Training Analyst at our partner NV Energy, and she shared with us what inspires her to give back to the Southern Nevada community! Through Mandisa’s caring spirit, she volunteers to support various causes in the community. UWSN’s Volunteer of the Month, sponsored by our partners at NV Energy, celebrates our local volunteers who are dedicated to serving our community and donating their time to make a difference. Read our interview with Mandisa below to learn how she supports our community through volunteering!
What inspired you to volunteer?
I’ve always wanted to help people like me, people who just sometimes need a little extra help, who want to give their kids opportunities they never had or just need some extra TLC. Seeing the smile on people’s faces when they know there are people out there who care and want to help. By giving my time I feel I can make an impact letting people know we care.
How are you supporting our community through volunteering?
I like to choose events that help kids, disabled individuals, low income and the planet- I am always recruiting people to come out and help, hoping that they catch the volunteer bug and pass it along to friends and family.
What does it mean to work for a company like NV Energy that encourages giving back to our community? Knowing that NV Energy encourages volunteering and helping the community is one of the many reasons I love working for this company. I am proud to say I am an NV Energy employee and I love helping spread the word. My favorite part is when people are surprised that NV Energy is helping at an event and that we enjoy it and have pride in all of our events.
How has volunteering improved your life?
It helps give me a sense of purpose and the hope that I am making a difference. I deal with anxiety and some other things and by volunteering it has helped me better control how I deal with my anxiety when meeting new people.
