Volunteer of the Month Spotlight | Marta Poling Schmitt

We are honored to celebrate Marta Poling Schmitt as our Volunteer of the Month sponsored by NV Energy! A dedicated board member and community advocate, Marta has poured her heart into our mission through her leadership and volunteerism. One of her most impactful experiences has been with the Women United Suit Drive, where she helped organize hundreds of donated shoes for women preparing to re-enter the workforce after experiencing domestic violence, trafficking, incarceration, or long-term caregiving. As she paired and wrapped each set of shoes, Marta reflected on how this simple act was helping women quite literally stand on their feet and march toward new futures. It’s a memory—and a mission—that continues to inspire her service.

For Marta, volunteering is more than a way to give back, it’s essential to who she is. A retired Lutheran pastor, she’s always found joy in helping others, and now sees volunteering as a deeply fulfilling way to care for her community. She believes giving back is not only a personal responsibility but a reflection of the many people who have shaped her own life. Marta lives by the idea that “a rising tide lifts all boats,” and she works to uplift those who have been marginalized by circumstance or identity. Whether it’s sharing time, talents, or resources, her goal is always to offer hope and support to those who need it most.

Marta’s message to anyone thinking about getting involved with United Way of Southern Nevada is enthusiastic and clear: “JUMP! Jump in!” She believes there are countless ways to make a meaningful impact—many of which help neighbors you may not even know yet. From quick, hands-on opportunities like one-day kit builds to larger events like the Project REACH Senior Expos in August or the Day of Caring on September 19, there’s something for everyone. Marta encourages people to bring friends or coworkers, explore advocacy through UWSN’s External Affairs Department, support early education with the Nevada Ready! State Pre-K Program, or connect with peers through Women United. No matter your schedule, interests, or experience level, Marta reminds us that there’s always a way to get involved and help build a stronger Southern Nevada.
