United We Prepare: New Initiative Helps Southern Nevada Residents Strengthen Disaster Preparedness

Las Vegas, NV (July 29, 2025) – With support from Verizon, United Way of Southern Nevada (UWSN) is launching United We Prepare, a local initiative to empower Southern Nevadans to be ready for natural and man-made disasters through

through preparedness workshops, community outreach, and support for various nonprofit programs.

The first disaster preparedness workshop will be held in partnership with the City of Las Vegas on Thursday, August 14 from 6:30 PM-7:30 PM at the North Las Vegas Alexander Library (1755 W. Alexander, NLV, NV 89032). This workshop is free and open to the public. Attendees will receive a disaster preparedness kit to help safeguard their homes and families.

“At United Way of Southern Nevada, building a resilient community means preparing our neighbors before disaster strikes and staying by their side through recovery,” said Samuel Rudd, President and CEO of UWSN. “With Verizon’s partnership, we’re strengthening our community’s ability to prepare for and respond to disasters. By focusing on the unique needs of Southern Nevada, we’re empowering residents, nonprofits, and neighborhoods to stay safe, informed, and ready to face future emergencies.”

According to FEMA’s 2024 National Household Survey, less than half of Americans had a disaster plan in place. UWSN aims to host eight workshops across Clark County – ultimately increasing overall community confidence and readiness.

This preparedness initiative builds on UWSN’s longstanding work in crisis response. In 2024, UWSN collaborated with FEMA, United Way Worldwide, and 22 local nonprofit organizations through the Emergency Food and Shelter Program to provide emergency housing, food, and utility support to over 61,000 residents of Southern Nevada.

Now, UWSN is expanding its focus to ensure families are equipped before disaster strikes, starting with information, tools and support to help them take action.
