United Way of Southern Nevada’s partnerships with East Valley Family Services and Puentes can provide housing assistance to Southern Nevadans in need. Recently both organizations assisted the tenants at the Desert Gardens Apartments, who were being evicted because the complex is being demolished due to unsafe living conditions. These agencies were called upon to provide resources and services to tenants who have been served notices to vacate the property. The Puentes and East Valley Family services teams have been meeting onsite to help these families navigate housing assistance services during this very pressing time. To some, this has been their home for many years and they have no place to turn. They do not know what to do with their belongings while others, including seniors and veterans, have a pet they will not depart with. One family has 15 children, while other families have a child with special needs. Puentes and East Valley Family Services have been able to place 9 families in new homes using Emergency Food and Shelter Program (EFSP) funding provided through United Way of Southern Nevada. Our partners are working around the clock, including going door to door with the Metro Police Department, making sure no one is left without access to necessary resources to find new housing. Together, United Way, the East Valley Family Services, and Puentes are helping Southern Nevadans have a safe place to call home.
