United Way of Southern Nevada and HELP of Southern Nevada are dedicated to providing support to Southern Nevadans experiencing homelessness like Constance. Constance is a 21 year old young woman who we were able to help overcome homelessness. When Constance came to our partner, she was living in a tent with her mother and was struggling with substance abuse. Constance had no where to turn and had trouble finding a path out of her situation as she had no birth certificate, social security card or other documentation. In October of 2021, Constance found hope through the support of the Shannon West Homeless Youth Center (SWHYC) funded by United Way of Southern Nevada.
The SWHYC Employment Coordinator helped Constance with obtaining a birth certificate and Social Security Card, so she could accept a job offer. Constance’s goal was to be a Pharmacy Technician. Through HELP’s Workforce Services program, Constance found an opportunity at a local Walgreens store; and enrolled in their “Earn while you Learn” Pharmacy Technician Apprentice program. Constance was provided with interview clothing prior to her job interview; and was provided with a 30-day bus pass for transportation to her new job. Constance has been able to maintain her employment for the last four months. She has attended counseling sessions and therapy for her substance abuse issues; and enrolled in workshops offered by Legal Aid of Southern Nevada to educate herself on resolving her legal issues. She has even opened her own bank account! Through these wraparound services provided by United Way and our partners, we can provide pathways for Southern Nevadans to achieve self-sufficiency and have hope for the future. Donate today to ensure we can continue to help Southern Nevadans like Constance at uwsn.org/hope.
