LOCAL FAMILIES BECOME THE TARGET OF SCAMMERS AS THE TAX DEADLINE APPROACHES

LAS VEGAS, NV –  As we approach the tax filing deadline, we see an increase in residents being targeted by scammers.  One that has resurfaced this year is a scam call that claims to offer relief for unpaid taxes from past years. You can hear a recording HERE. These scammers usually look for residents who may be under pressure and want them to feel obligated to share their personal information. The IRS offers information on its website about various types of tax scams and information about how to report them and protect yourself.

However, in Las Vegas, there are safe and trusted organizations that offer free tax preparation. The Nevada Free Taxes Coalition (NFTC), in collaboration with United Way of Southern Nevada, aims to help low-income communities by offering free tax filing services to individuals earning less than $64,000 a year. Nevadans can visit their closest VITA sites to file their tax returns for free by Tax Day (April 15th). Here, you can find more information about VITA locations and the program.

On April 15th, they will also be hosting an all-day TAX-A-THON at 3 locations:

  1. Nevada Free Taxes Coalition Headquarters 4825 S Rainbow Blvd. Las Vegas, NV 89103
  2. Alexander Library 1755 W Alexander Rd, North Las Vegas, NV 89032
  3. Doolittle Community Center 1950 J St, Las Vegas, NV 89106

It is recommended that those looking to get their taxes prepared at the site bring the following documents to be able to file appropriately.

  • Valid driver’s license or photo identification (self & spouse’s, if applicable)
  • Social Security cards or Individual Taxpayer Identification notices/cards for you, your spouse, and your dependents
  • Birth dates for you, your spouse, and/or dependents on the return
  • All forms W-2, 1099, and information for other income received
  • A copy of last year’s tax return and information for all deductions/credits
  • Daycare payment records and daycare providers’ Tax ID number
  • Checking and Savings Account and Routing number(s)
  • If filing jointly, both spouses must be present and sign the return
  • Health insurance coverage information for all members of the household (if applicable)
