Emergency Food and Shelter program’s largest funding distribution in Southern Nevada history meets growing community needs
LAS VEGAS – As the cost of food, rent, and utilities continue to soar due to inflation, and Southern Nevadans budgets tighten, United Way of Southern Nevada (UWSN) is proud to announce that 20 of the organization’s nonprofit partners received $5.8 million in federal funds through Phase 39 of the Emergency Food and Shelter Program (EFSP). This distribution of $5.8 million marks the largest EFSP funding distribution in Southern Nevada’s history and will provide essential food, shelter, and utility assistance.
“United Way of Southern Nevada is proud to partner with the Clark County Local Board of the Emergency Food and Shelter Program to distribute an incredible $5.8 million to meet the growing needs of our community,” said Julian High, President and CEO of UWSN. “Together, UWSN and our partners will ensure that Southern Nevada families receive the support they need to put food on the table and keep the lights on.”
In Southern Nevada, the EFSP provides a network of resources for those struggling to keep a roof over their heads and food on the table. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Clark County’s Emergency Food and Shelter Program distributed $4.1 million to provide over 400,000 meals and more than 46,300 nights of shelter. EFSP funds were also used to support 1,140 households with emergency rental assistance.

The Emergency Food and Shelter Program is overseen by a National Board that is chaired by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency and consists of representatives from American Red Cross, Catholic Charities USA, National Council of the Churches of Christ in the USA, The Jewish Federation of North America, The Salvation Army, and United Way Worldwide. The Local Board is charged to distribute funds appropriated by Congress to help expand the capacity of food and shelter programs in Clark County.
The Local Board for Clark County’s Emergency Food and Shelter Program determines how the federal funds are to be distributed among the emergency assistance programs run by local service agencies in the area. The Local Board is responsible for recommending agencies to receive these funds and any additional funds made available under this phase of the program. Members of the Local Board include representatives from local governments, nonprofit service agencies, and faith-based organizations.
