LAS VEGAS- January 20, 2022, Nevada Free Taxes Coalition (NFTC) in partnership with the United Way of Southern Nevada (UWSN) and the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) invites the community to attend the Earned Income Tax Credit 16th Anniversary Event on Friday January 28, 2022. - Free Tax Preparation from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM
In 2021, 25 million workers received more than $62 billion in EITC refunds. In Nevada, 262 thousand taxpayers received 626 million in EITC, with the average refund of $2,391. If Southern Nevadans worked last year and their earned income was no more than $57,414, Nevada Free Taxes Coalition can check their eligibility status for EITC. The EITC can mean up to a $6,728 refund when workers file a return if they have qualifying children. Workers without a qualifying child could be eligible for a smaller credit up to $1,502 dollars. On average, EITC adds $2,400 dollars to refunds.
One-third of the EITC population changes each year. The IRS estimates that four out of five workers claim the EITC they earned. This leaves billions of dollars on the table each year. Through this event, NFTC and UWSN are providing the opportunity for Southern Nevadans who are eligible to file a tax return even if they don’t owe any taxes to claim the EITC. These additional funds provided by the EITC can be essential for Southern Nevadans and can cover groceries, rent, utilities and other bills.
From 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM, NFTC VITA volunteers who are IRS certified will provide direct tax support and help Southern Nevadans navigate the process of applying for the EITC and help them receive the refund they deserve. During the event, NFTC VITA volunteers will prepare and e-file (electronically file) tax returns for Southern Nevadans at no cost.
