Two sports superstars join in efforts to support the Southern Nevada community
LAS VEGAS- February 14, 2022- United Way of Southern Nevada (UWSN) is pleased to announce the appointment of two world-class athletes and community leaders to serve on its Board of Directors, each of whom joined in 2022. These members include Carl Nassib of the Las Vegas Raiders and former MLB player Marty Cordova of Bent Pixels.
“We are thrilled that two incredible Las Vegas professional athletes have decided to join our board of directors to make an impact in Southern Nevada.,” said Julian High, President and CEO, UWSN. “With Marty’s deep roots in our community and Carl’s passion for philanthropy, they embody the true giving spirit of Las Vegas and will help us continue to create meaningful change in the place we all have the privilege to call home.”
“With their dedication to transforming Southern Nevada into a more equitable place for all, Carl Nassib and Marty Cordova are valuable additions to the United Way of Southern Nevada board of directors,” said Ann Simmons-Nicholson, Board Chair of UWSN. “We are honored to have such incredible leaders from the Las Vegas sports sector join our team.”
Carl Nassib made headlines both on and off of the field as defensive end and as the first active NFL player to identify as a member of the LGBTQ+ community. Before joining the Las Vegas Raiders organization in 2020, he played for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and was drafted by the Cleveland Browns. An All-American with the Penn State Nittany Lions, Carl has a bachelor’s degree in Biology and is set to launch Rayze, a mobile app start-up business at the end of 2021. Dedicated to making an impact, Carl is a proud partner of The Trevor Project and has donated $100,000 to support the organization’s suicide prevention services for LGBTQ+ youth. He also is a member of the So Good Now board of directors and is passionate about participating in Special Olympics events.

Born and raised in Las Vegas, Marty Cordova is a former MLB left fielder named American League Rookie of the Year in 1995. Marty was a member of the Minnesota Twins, Toronto Blue Jays, and the Baltimore Orioles, among other professional baseball teams. He attended Bishop Gorman and he has been actively volunteering at the Ronald McDonald House. For over ten years, Marty served as COO for Bent Pixels, a digital media network focused on YouTube creators and is currently serving as an owner and advisor to the organization. Marty is now focused on his passion for philanthropy and expanding his impact in local communities through philanthropic pursuits including his new role as a United Way of Southern Nevada board member.
