A single mother always wanted to be a part of the Girl Scouts when she was young, but scouting was not available in her part of the community. Years later, she desired her daughters to experience Girl Scouts’ Tropas Exploradora program. One of her girls is very shy and has challenges with a speech impediment, and this mom wanted her daughter to be able to practice public speaking without being afraid of getting bullied. A funded community partner of UWSN, Girl Scouts of Southern Nevada’s mission is to build girls of courage, confidence, and character who make the world a better place. Now, this mother feels a sense of security and comfort in knowing that her daughter has found her voice and can practice speaking without judgment. Thanks to United Way of Southern Nevada funding, families like this can grow and experience all of the values and friendships gained from scouting programs.
