Loyal Contributors | The Buehrers

Roger-and-Lana-retouchedRoger and Lana Buehrer have supported United Way of Southern Nevada since they arrived in 1983, but their participation reaches back another 10 years when they lived in Northwestern Ohio. The Buehrers left Sylvania, Ohio, with two little boys, Aaron and Nick, to begin a marvelous adventure in Las Vegas.

“After 30 years of actively participating in this community and its vision of the future, we continue to believe in ‘paying it forward,’” said Roger.

The couple also instilled this philosophy in their sons. Both Aaron (36), who lives in Nampa, Idaho, and works for T-Mobile and Nick (33), who lives in Las Vegas and works for Southwest Gas Corporation, participate in United Way giving.

Roger and Lana’s financial support, which has included membership in “Gold Knight” and “Templar” societies for more than 10 years, has been augmented over the years by participation as volunteers and board members.

“We believe that the only way Las Vegas can continue to grow in a healthy manner is by supporting those agencies that help meet the issues that challenge our community,” said Roger. “Support should not just be financial, but should also include volunteering time and energy.”

Roger continues to serve on the boards of directors for the Girl Scouts of Southern Nevada and the East Valley Family Services, where he is board treasurer. In addition, Roger serves on the Bus Shelter and Bench Advisory Committee for the Regional Transportation Committee and teaches public relations part time for the UNLV Continuing Education program. Lana serves as a member of the Community Action Board for the Women’s Research Institute of Nevada.

“Roger and I encourage everyone to become engaged in our Las Vegas community,” Lana added. “There are many challenges, and to mitigate these challenges is by participating in those special agencies, especially United Way agencies, that focus on making Las Vegas a better place to live.”

Organizations that have been part of the Buehrer’s volunteer lives include the Southern Nevada Chapter of the American Red Cross, Communities in Schools of Southern Nevada, Family and Child Treatment Center, the local National Public Radio station (KNPR), Vegas Public Broadcasting Station (KLVX), Nevada Area Health Education Center (AHEC), Nevada Arts Advocates, and Planned Parenthood of Southern Nevada. The Buehrers also donate to Heifer International, the National Museum of the American Indian, the Southern Poverty Law Center, the United Methodist Committee on Relief, and the University United Methodist Church (UUMC).

Lana is a member of the Las Vegas Literary Society, which provides scholarships to high school students, and the “Bookies,” UUMC book club that participates in various charitable activities throughout the year. Roger, in his spare time, sings tenor with the Silver Statesmen Barbershop Chorus and is active in two quartets.

Roger earned a B.S. in Journalism from Bowling Green State University (BGSU) in Bowling Green, Ohio, and an M.A. from American University in Washington, D.C. He is an Accredited Public Relations professional and was elected to the Public Relations Society of America College of Fellows in 2002. He had worked in the public information departments of both the Las Vegas Valley Water District and Southwest Gas Corporation but retired in 2012. Lana has a B.S. in English from BGSU and an M.B.A. from the University of Phoenix. She is certified as both a Project Management Professional and a Facilities Management Professional. Lana was the facilities’ services manager for National Security Technologies (NSTec), the prime contractor to the Department of Energy for the Nevada National Security Site until her retirement in 2012.

Volunteers in Action | DIRECTV

DIRECTV

In the hot desert land of Las Vegas, many children never experience the wonder of fruits and vegetables growing in the earth. Thanks to United Way of Southern Nevada’s Volunteer Center which coordinated a volunteer opportunity for DIRECTV employees, seeds and fruit trees were planted, educational murals painted and picnic tables assembled enhancing the local Vegas Roots Community Garden.

DIRECTV2DIRECTV identified United Way of Southern Nevada’s Volunteer Center as its “go-to” organization to help strategize, plan and implement a meaningful corporate service project in southern Nevada.

“Many other national companies have sought out United Way’s Volunteer Center because we work closely with the community, so we know the areas of greatest need,” said Chris Cappas, Senior Director, United Way’s Volunteer Center. “We create seamless, inspirational and easy volunteer opportunities for workforce involvement.”

Held on Earth Day, April 22, 2013, nearly 200 volunteers participated in the project including employees from DIRECTV, Home Depot and from the community.

The group painted educational murals, built planters, planted seeds and 16 fruit trees, installed solar lighting, assembled picnic tables and painted a fence and playground equipment.

“Children love visiting the garden during the spring and fall and now when they visit they will be welcomed by 12 beautiful planters, fruit trees and picnic tables to eat lunch,” said Chris. “They can also enjoy educational murals, which will help them identify different kinds of fruit and vegetables and understand how they grow.”

Tocqueville Spotlight | Beth Campbell

Beth-Campbell

In the fast-paced, competitive world of architecture, Beth Campbell has succeeded through her dedication to people, integrity and creating solutions to design challenges.

“From talent development with staff, to collaborating with amazing clients, to designing places that enhance people’s lives – I am fortunate to be in constant contact with curious and inspiring people,” said Beth.

With Gensler for 13 years, Beth has served at the Chicago, San Ramon and San Francisco offices. She is now the Director of Workplace and Managing Principal at the Las Vegas office. In this role, Beth works closely with the Regional Leadership Team to build on existing relationships and establish new ones, while continuing to deliver world-class design.

If Beth Campbell could be one person for a day, it would be Meg Whitman, president and chief executive officer of computer giant Hewlett-Packard (HP) who rose to the top of HP after failing to win the California governor’s race in 2010.

“I admire that accomplishment in the face of adversity,” said Beth.

Inspired by how the community of Boston and its visitors pulled together after the recent tragedy, Beth believes in the power of volunteering and the synergy created by people joining together to create change.

“United Way connects those in the community wishing to volunteer with those who are most in need – in particular families and children in need,” explained Beth. “Volunteers usually get more out of what they are doing emotionally and spiritually than the people for which they are volunteering their services.”

Beth decided to get involved with United Way when she learned about the work of the Women’s Leadership Council. She also took the next step and became a member of the Tocqueville Society because it was an opportunity to be a part of something bigger than herself.

“United Way provides a great avenue to give back,” said Beth. “When I give to United Way, I know the money is going to the right place.”

Beth believes that United Way has identified the greatest needs in the community and delivers services to those who need it most.

“Recently they offered free tax preparation for families with incomes under $51,000,” said Beth “The United Way always seems to know what the community needs when they need it.”

WLC Spotlight | Rebecca L. Howell

Rebecca-L-HowellInspired by the life of Diana, Princess of Wales, Rebecca L. Howell strives to be inclusive and kind to the people that she meets daily.

“She was such a warm and caring person,” said Rebecca. “She accomplished so much in such a short lifetime.”

One of five children, Rebecca spends her spare time volunteering, traveling, scrapbooking  and spending time with friends. Number one on Rebecca’s bucket list is to ring the opening bell at the New York Stock Exchange.

As a Relationship Manager for Wilmington Trust SP Services (NV), Inc., Rebecca is responsible for the management of a client service team providing a full array of nexus services for numerous special purpose entities.

“I maintain a high level of client contact by serving as a corporate officer/director and attending Nevada company board meetings,” said Rebecca. “I also work with team members to provide administrative, office and banking services to corporate clients, some of which are Fortune 500 companies.”

If Rebecca could make one change in the community, it would be to improve education.

“This is an ongoing challenge not isolated to Las Vegas,” said Rebecca. ”I think we need to look at education in a different way and be open to new ideas.”

Rebecca’s first exposure to United Way of Southern Nevada was through its Women’s Leadership Council (WLC) when she attended a luncheon at the invitation of WLC member, Krista Darnold.

“I was so impressed by the energy of the women in the room, and I wanted to be a part of it,” said Rebecca. “I am excited to be a member of such a dynamic group of women.”

Rebecca has served as a WLC member for two years.

“I really enjoy being a part of the WLC Suit Drive committee,” said Rebecca. “Helping with the Suit Drive is such a rewarding experience – we see the generosity of the Las Vegas community and know that these items can truly change a woman’s life.”

Rebecca contributes her time by volunteering, fundraising, contributing financially and encouraging others to get involved.

“Find something that interests you – working with seniors, children or animals,” said Rebecca. “You can volunteer in different capacities for various organizations – hands on, administrative, or fundraising.  All of these scenarios are rewarding.”

Volunteers in Action | NGAGE: Next Generation Actively Gaining Experience

volunteers-NGAGE2Valerie Carreto and Shayon McCrary (pictured first two from the left) are two Clark County high school students who are making a big impact in their community through volunteerism. Both Valerie and Shayon have tracked their volunteer hours this year as part of the United Way of Southern Nevada program, NGAGE: Next Generation Actively Gaining Experience.

“With 700 high school participants, we have more than seven times the number of high school students participating this year than last,” said Chris Cappas United Way of Southern Nevada’s Senior Director, Volunteer Center. “It’s amazing to see the increase in high school students with a vested interest in making a difference in our community.”

With a combined 470 volunteer hours completed this year, Valerie and Shayon are two all-star volunteers.

Over 700 teen participants have tracked their volunteer hours through the NGAGE program this year, and the students who reach 100 hours will be honored at the annual recognition event at the Fashion Show Mall on April 18th.

NGAGE is a collaboration between United Way of Southern Nevada’s Volunteer Center, Clark County School District School-Community Partnership Office, and Channel 8 News Now and their Community Pride partners.

Loyal Contributor | Carol A. Brink, CLU, ChFC

Carol-BrinkCarol A. Brink, CLU, ChFC,  began her life in an idyllic setting, growing up on a hill in Sioux City, Iowa, surrounded by rivers, sand dunes, cattle and cornfields. Through perseverance and dedication, she became one of the first four women to be named as an officer of The Bankers Life (now Principal Financial Group).

“While pursuing my career in the financial services industry, I knew it would be important to establish credibility in a primarily male-dominated business,” said Carol.

With a strong commitment to personal development and life-long learning, she obtained several financial designations in addition to obtaining her Masters of Science in Financial Services (MSFS).

Along the way she married her husband Ron Forret and his two sons, Brad and Jeff.

“The boys were very active while they were growing up. Brad now has his own family with two daughters that love gymnastics, soccer and equestrian riding.” said Carol. “Where does the time go?”

With aspirations of enjoying golf and their other hobbies, Ron and Carol moved to Las Vegas about 13 years ago to be closer to her aging parents.

“As hard as we try, we just haven’t taken the time to play golf,” said Carol.

In addition to golf, Carol’s favorite hobbies include photography, live theater, college football, playing the piano, helping stray animals find homes and going out for dinner.

After many years with Wells Fargo Wealth Management Group, Carol is now with Ameriprise Financial Services, Inc. as Manager, Operations.

Being active in professional organizations and volunteer work has always been very important to Carol.

“I always felt it was important to give back to the industry that I grew up in, so early on I became a member of the Society of Financial Service Professionals (FSP),” said Carol.

Carol’s roots with United Way run deep.

“I remember being very young in Sioux City and seeing this big red ‘thermometer’ on the side of Younkers Department Store tracking the United Way giving campaign,” said Carol.

In both Des Moines, IA,  and Las Vegas, NV, Carol served as her company’s campaign team captain and volunteered on various United Way projects.

Carol discovered United Way of Southern Nevada’s Women’s Leadership Council (WLC) about four years ago.

“I knew it would be a great way to get involved with our community, network with other women and make a difference,” said Carol. “WLC is such an active group of professional women who touch so many lives in our core areas of Education, Health and Financial Stability.”

Carol’s primary focus has been serving on the Volunteerism Committee, focusing on the Annual Suit Drive and the Annual WLC Luncheon Fashion Show.

“What’s amazing to me is the variety of ways that you can get involved with United Way,” said Carol. “What a great way to help others while continuing to develop and build your own leadership skills.”

WLC Volunteer Opportunities | March Update

In April, we have two exciting volunteer opportunities for the WLC!

  • April 9th and ongoing | As we mentioned in the Project Funding Committee section of the newsletter, on April 9th at Dean Petersen Elementary School on Cambridge near UNLV we will have our first Breakfast with Books. This is one of the 3 projects that were approved in January at the general membership meeting. The WLC will be providing the books at Dean Petersen for this program. Inside each book is a sticker that says – “This book was generously donated by the women of United Way of Southern Nevada’s Women’s Leadership Council” with our logo. The families will have breakfast with their child and take the book home with them to begin their home libraries.

This project will have volunteer opportunities on the 2nd Tuesday of each month during the CCSD school year. We will help set it up, check families in, hand out books, distribute door prizes and help clean up. Currently we are anticipating 1 – 2 volunteers per month. We may determine after April 9th if there is the need for more volunteers. Please contact Kim Planchunas if you are interested in volunteering. June 5th is the last day of the CCSD 9 month school year. We will update our website – uwsn.org/wlc when this program will start again in the Fall.

  • April 10th and ongoing | Our second volunteer opportunity on Wednesday April 10th is at Clark High School. The sophomore and junior FERC students are going on a field trip to UNLV. The WLC has been invited to serve as chaperones for the day or meet the students on campus during lunch to visit with them, perhaps answer any questions regarding classes required for specific careers. Please contact Lawrel Larsen at Lawrell@uwsn.org or 702.892.2319 for more information.

Making a Difference in our Community

The WLC mission statement created in August 2012 at the WLC Executive Committee strategic planning retreat states – “Our mission is to engage and develop our members to be leaders in creating impactful change in our community through education, health and financial stability.”

Ferc_letter_small

A letter from a FERC student

Often we wonder if we are making a difference in the community. I have two recent stories from February to share with you.

The first story is from a freshman student at one of our Family Engagement Resource Centers – Silverado High School. Luis writes…

Our second story relates to our Annual Suit Drive each November along with the functional centerpieces – purses filled with toiletry/health care items that a woman would need for a job interview or her first day of work. Each year at our annual WLC Luncheon the tables are beautifully decorated with donated purses inside gold tulle bags with colourful bows attached. After the luncheon they are delivered by WLC members to the Shade Tree, S.A.F.E. House and Women’s Development Center for their back to work programs for women. This year Rhonda Clausen delivered the purses to Shade Tree. The 2 women in the photo with Rhonda were wearing suits from our November Suit Drive. They had carefully prepared their thank you and gratitude to the WLC for the clothes they had received. Rhonda showed them the hand written notes that were placed in each purse from WLC members encouraging and supporting them.

De Andre Esteen, Director of Development for Shade Tree sent an e-mail with these words to Rhonda – “You guys do wonderful things to assist our ladies and it is our pleasure to have you stand next to us in our community. We have many talented women here with many skills; they just need the opportunity to shine.”

Many of the women at Shade Tree are actively looking for work and have a myriad of skills, expertise and experience levels. If you know of any opportunity for employment, please contact Maggie at Shade Tree at 702.385.0072 for more information.

Purses from the WLC Luncheon

The simple acts of having a place for a high school student to go “in time of need” for assistance or providing a woman an outfit or purse filled with toiletry/beauty items to give them the confidence they need to start a new life – that is what our mission is about – “creating impactful change in our community….”

From the Committees… | Annual Luncheon Committee | March Update

WLC_Luncheon

Looking good ladies!

The energy in the room was palpable as 460 community leaders took their seats at the Women’s Leadership Council (WLC) Annual Luncheon Fashion Show at Four Seasons Hotel Las Vegas on Wednesday, February 27 at 11:30 am.

Featuring elegant, bold and timeless styles that can transition easily from the workplace to evening, the DKNY’s 2013 Spring Collection Fashion Show featured WLC members and staff members from WLC’s Family Engagement Resource Centers.

Recognized at the event were four women who set the bar high for community leadership and engagement. Dr. Mary Ann Allison received the Commitment to Health Award; Gina B. Polovina, Vice President of Government Affairs for Boyd Gaming Corporation received the Commitment to Education Award; Linda Smith, Associate Executive Director for Opportunity Village received the Commitment to Financial Stability Award and Charlotte Hill received the Commitment to Volunteerism Award.

Guests were treated to a WLC Five Year Anniversary Video highlighting the group’s accomplishments throughout its history featuring live footage of its members in action.

At over 100 members strong, the group is improving children’s lives through its Family Engagement Resource Centers (FERCs), which are located at five local high schools and target teens at risk of not graduating. Over the past three years, WLC has donated over $400,000 to the FERCs, nurturing more than 3,500 high schoolers.

As a result of the 2012 WLC Annual Women’s Suit Drive, more than 6,200 professional items were collected including suits, dresses, shoes, handbags and jewelry. Items collected benefited Safe Nest, S.A.F.E. House, the Shade Tree, Goodwill of Southern Nevada’s Career Connection, HopeLink and HELP of Southern Nevada’s Work Opportunity Readiness Center, and the Women’s Development Center. All of these accredited United Way agencies have back-to-work programs for women.

Three new projects on the horizon for the group include further impacting children’s lives through education initiatives. WLC will partner with Spread the Word Nevada, a United Way of Southern Nevada accredited agency, to sponsor monthly events that provide breakfast with a book to at-risk children. Another project will provide books and financial planning information in three United Way of Southern Nevada school-based health clinic waiting rooms. The third new project offers 24-hour bus passes at no cost to students and parents that will make it easier to attend after school, evening and weekend events and presentations at the FERCs.

The members of the Women’s Leadership Council impact lives through their investment of $2,500 or more annually to United Way of Southern Nevada. The Annual Luncheon Fashion Show is a celebration of the women’s combined financial support and time.

Attendees had the opportunity to purchase raffle tickets for a chance to win a Hearts On Fire Fulfillment Diamond Pendant courtesy of MJ Christensen Diamonds, a luxurious DKNY cashmere Cozy sweater, two Donna Karan Fragrance Gift Baskets, a gift certificate for dinner for two at Verandah at Four Seasons Hotel Las Vegas and Mr. Lee selected an assortment of fine wines from his personal wine cellar.

The winner of the Hearts On Fire diamond pendant is our very Women’s Leadership Council member – Christine Karl! Congratulations Christine and thank you to Darlene & Cliff Miller with MJ Christensen Diamonds for generously donating this magnificent pendant valued at $6,990!

The lucky winner of the 2 tickets to the Ellen DeGeneres tickets is Lori Harrison with Bank of Nevada. Congratulations Lori and thank you to Bank of Nevada for being a sponsor at this year’s event!

Also recognized during the luncheon were the Lunch Sponsors including DKNY, Lee’s Discount Liquor, Miracle Mile Shops, MJ Christensen Diamonds, Nevada State Bank, NV Energy, US Bank, Wells Fargo and Wirtz Beverage Nevada.

To learn more about becoming a WLC member, please contact Lawrel Larsen at 702-892-2319 or visit uwsn.org/wlc.

Co-Chair’s Corner | March 2013

WLC Co-ChairsWe are what we DREAM!

We have all heard the phrase “we are what we eat”, right? Well, my Mother once told me we are what we DREAM, and WLC has big DREAMS this year. We are grateful for the successes we have seen in the first quarter and elated to dream – and believe – what we will achieve this year.

To highlight our first quarter successes, let’s begin with WLC’s 5th Annual Luncheon. Wow! What an amazing turnout – can you say 460 attendees and 8 new members?! Each year our Luncheon Committee creates a more enriching experience for our attendees. We send a heartfelt thank you to them, our WLC members who helped in many ways, and our sponsors who supported our extraordinary success. They included: DKNY, MJ Christenson, Wirtz Beverage Nevada, NV Energy, US Bank, Nevada State Bank, Lee’s Discount Liquor, Wells Fargo Bank and Miracle Mile Shops.

We held our General Membership Meeting on January 17th, and it was exciting to see 45 members. It was great to meet many of our new members and the positive engagement of our group was invigorating. To date, our group has raised $1,052,995. We voted and approved spending of $15,500 for three new projects that focus on children’s literacy and providing transportation for high school FERC students and their families (see Project Funding Committee Update for more details) and received updates from our committees. The impactful changes we are making in 2013 are something for which we can all be very proud.

We have ten new members since our fiscal year started in July of 2012. We welcome V. Joy Avedesian, Beth Campbell, Chris Cappas, Amanda Hurst, Sandi Milton, Alisa Mirabal, Darcie Pinkelman, Allyn Jaffrey Shulman, Nancy Syzdek and Della Tilsher. We are thrilled to have you part of this amazing group of ladies and look forward to getting to know you.

Our goal is to increase our membership beyond 34 new members this year. We believe (and DREAM) that with your encouragement and involvement, it will be achieved. Consider bringing one new member to an outreach event or invite her to have coffee with our WLC Director to hear more about our mission and results.

We encourage you to attend one of the upcoming FERC’s Bright Breakfast events to meet our future leaders and learn about their DREAMS. We recently attended Eldorado and Western High School’s Bright Breakfast events in February. We passed out breakfast to over 300 freshman students who are receiving A’s, B’s or C’s year to date. We had the opportunity to sit and chat with some of these future leaders and thrilled to hear their career paths. We heard career goals of becoming Veterinarian’s, Doctor’s, RN’s, and CPA’s, and all the kids were thinking ahead towards college. The FERC program is moving forward as a wonderful investment in our future leaders. These future leaders are what they DREAM.

Because of you, and our DREAMS, we are making strides in Las Vegas to improve education, financial stability and health. Your time and donations to this organization cannot be measured. Cindy and I thank you for helping us make Las Vegas a better place. If you dream it, you will achieve it.

Breakfast with Champions

Bright-BeginningUnited Way Women’s Leadership Council (WLC) members had the opportunity to personally meet some of the students that their funding has helped during the Bright Breakfast on Friday, February 8 at Eldorado High School. The Women’s Leadership Council is touching lives one student at a time through its Family Engagement Resource Centers at five local high schools – also known as FERCs.

The breakfast was a celebration of over 300 FERC freshmen with outstanding grades. These students are active within the school, but don’t allow their extracurricular activities to interfere with their studies. They take advantage of the opportunities afforded them.

As Principal John Anzalone mentioned, “The Family Engagement Resource Center is their resource. The Sparky lounge is not a teacher’s lounge. It is their lounge to use as they see fit.”

Together, the WLC has donated more than $400,000 dollars to the FERCs, nurturing more than 3,500 high schoolers who are at risk of not graduating and the WLC has committed another $200,000 to continue the program for the next two years.

WLC and the Commitment To Education Council will invest over one million dollars in just five years to support family engagement activities and strategies and provide full support for over 46,000 students and their families.
